Habilitation Guide

The Primacy of Parents in Habilitation

Dear Mothers and Fathers, Dear Families,

Sometimes a parent sees what everyone else in the room misses.

It’s just like the age-old story of the "Elephant in the Room"….

In a dark room, there is a giant elephant. But everyone describes only the part they touch. One calls it a wall, another a fan, another a rope… No one can describe the whole.

In CVI, there is also a giant elephant standing in the middle of the room, but everyone is looking only through their own area of expertise.

The ophthalmologist looks at the eyes and says:

“Visual acuity is normal.”.

The teacher notices the attention problem and says:

“They are struggling to focus.”.

The physiotherapist looks at movement planning.

The psychologist sees the anxiety.

The neurologist examines the MRI images.

Everyone is describing a different part of the elephant.

But most of the time, no one sees the whole.

In that moment, the parent notices this:

The child loses their way in a crowd.

They cannot find the object they want in the toy basket.

They hesitate on the stairs.

They freeze in new environments.

They sometimes cannot recognize faces without hearing a voice.

And right here, the first person to connect the pieces is often the parent.

Because CVI is not merely a matter of "seeing or not seeing."

It is about the way the brain organizes the visual world.

For this reason, even though their eyes appear healthy, some children struggle to functionally make sense of the visual world.

You watch your child’s daily life.

You witness their relationship with the visual world. Sometimes the child seems to see; at other times, they become unable to decipher that same world.

Why “Parent-Led Habilitation”?

Because habilitation does not only start in the clinic.

It starts at home.

It starts in the kitchen.

It starts during play.

It starts when a child finds their way by following their mother's voice.

At AGAHDER, we do not see families merely as "recipients of support." We see you as active stakeholders who produce observations, develop solutions, and give direction to knowledge.

Because sometimes a small method developed by a mother can open a massive door for another child.

What Will We Do Together on This Journey?

We Will Render the World More Understandable Through methods like “Radio Parenting,” we will help your child make sense of their environment not just with their eyes, but through language, rhythm, and predictability. Sometimes a sound can transform into a visual map in a child’s mind.

We Will Make Daily Life Observations Visible Together, we will understand in which environments your child struggles and under which conditions they function more comfortably.

Because CVI is often not visible in a single test; it becomes visible within life itself..

We Will Transform Experiences into Knowledge Your experiences are not just personal stories.

They can also form the foundation for future scientific studies, educational models, and habilitation approaches.

You Are Not Alone

This path can sometimes be exhausting, uncertain, and a process that makes you feel misunderstood.

But we know now that:

To understand how a child sees the world, one must look not only at their eyes but also at their lived experience..

And on this journey, one of the most important guides is the parent themselves.

Welcome. You are not alone here.

To better understand your child’s visual responses in daily life and to establish scientific data, you can map out your roadmap by completing the 51-question visual profile assessment inventory meticulously prepared by Professor Gordon Dutton.

It will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
